Sell Yourself and the $$$ Comes Easy — Part 1
Self promotion doesn’t just make sense. It makes you money.
You can substantially increase the fees that you set and get , or the salary you command simply by blowing your horn and tooting your flute.
You can set and get any fee or salary you want to as long as you can adequately differentiate yourself from competitors who charge or request less.
“To be successful, you have to be unique, “Walt Disney said. “So different, that if people want what you have, they have to come to you to get it.”
And, once they do, they’ll pay the price – your price.
Yet, as a “personal salesperson,” you have a challenge. The typical individual you seek to influence – your prospect, your client, your boss – is subjected to an average of 1250 sales messages a day over the Web, through the media and elsewhere.
You need to add magic to your message in a way that clearly sets you apart from others who do what you do and want what you want.
So, what makes you different?
When I asked that question at a public seminar I presented years ago, one saleswoman stood up and said: “I’m from Dallas, and I have big hair and flair!”
Want more meaningful ways to set yourself apart? Try presenting yourself as a “specialist.” Talk about your special skills, your special area of expertise and the clients with whom you specialize.
Discuss your accomplishments, and awards, degrees and other recognition you’ve received. Recall former occupations or areas of study.
How well you promote yourself will determine how prosperous you become, since you can only do the best job of selling your stuff when you do the best job of selling yourself.
You can only do the best job of selling yourself by identifying your “only.”
“Only” is by far the most important word in your self promotion vocabulary. It’s the one word that puts you in a class by yourself and best highlights your uniqueness.
Identify yourself as the only local interior designer with a degree in landscape architecture, or the area’s only award winning real estate staging company, or the region’s only window fashion professional with contracts with four national hotel chains – and you’ll stand out in ways others do not.
